In today’s hybrid world, it’s not unusual for me to coach a business owner in York in the morning, a team in Harrogate after lunch, and someone in Devon by mid-afternoon – all without leaving my office in Scarborough.
The way we work has changed, but the challenges haven’t: keeping our team engaged, productive, and mentally well is still one of the toughest parts of running a business.
And if you’re feeling stretched or exhausted yourself, you’re not alone.
Many of the business leaders I coach – from across North Yorkshire and beyond – tell me that burnout, disengagement, and constant firefighting are holding them back from growth.
So, how can we keep our people energised and build a sustainable business?
Here are a few key ideas I share with my clients.
Create Space for Real Conversations
Burnout doesn’t start with a bang. It creeps in quietly. When people stop talking openly about stress, workload, or uncertainty, engagement drops soon after.
Make space for honest conversations, not just performance reviews. A 15-minute “how are you really doing?” check-in can be one of the best engagement tools you have.
Lead by Example
If you’re replying to emails at midnight, your team notices. The culture of a business reflects the habits of its leaders.
As a coach, I often work with business owners to set healthy boundaries – and model them. That’s where true leadership begins: showing your team it’s possible to work hard without burning out.
Align Purpose and People
Teams stay engaged when they see how their work matters. If your people understand the bigger “why” behind what they do, motivation and wellbeing both improve.
I sometimes call this “heart-based leadership” – connecting business growth with personal fulfilment.
Take a Step Back
Whether it’s a coaching session, a wellbeing retreat, or simply a walk by the sea, stepping back helps you see patterns that aren’t visible in the daily rush.
That’s why I created my Scaling Without Sacrifice approach – to help business owners and their teams perform sustainably, with clarity and joy.
Ask for Support
You don’t have to do this alone. Working with a coach can help you and your team see blind spots, reset priorities, and rebuild energy.
I offer one-to-one and team coaching via Zoom – or in person across North Yorkshire – to help business owners create engaged, resilient teams and avoid burnout before it starts.
